The latest cricketer to have been bitten by the acting bug (after Sunil Gavaskar in Savli, Sandeep Patil in Kabhi Ajnabi the, Vinod Kambli in Anarth and Mohsin Khan in Batwara) is Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar. It has been reliably learnt that the Pakistani cricketer who had earlier been approached to play Shiney Ahuja’s role in Gangster, has started shooting for a ollywood film, Main Aur Meri Himmat with Hansika.The shooting for the film is already underway in a village in Punjab. The film is a story of a Pakistani cricketer who arrives in India on a tour and ends up falling in love with an Indian girl. As to what happens to their love story, forms the crux of the film.
Yusuf makes Irfan dream a reality
Irfan Pathan, who is going through a lean patch in his cricketing career of late, had something to cheer about on Eid. Irfan, who has a penchant for cars, recently got the perfect gift he could have got - an expensive and elegant brand new Toyota SUV from his elder brother Yusuf Pathan. The car, costing about Rs 20 lakh, is perhaps the most expensive gift given by Yusuf to Irfan. “I have a penchant for cars, especially SUVs. Though we already have a luxurious car, I will now drive only this car as it’s very dear to me,” added Irfan. The lanky (Yusuf) hard-hitting batsman had selected white-coloured SUV well in advance and kept it a secret from his sibling in which family members were also involved.

Sachin once again has proved that he is the best ODI batsman in the world. Little master overcame the challenge of many greats of the game in the competition organized by ESPN website. Kambli’s chase on
Former cricketer Vinod Kambli recently contested from the Vikhroli assembly constituency on a Third Front ticket in the assembly polls of Maharashtra. Earlier to this former Indian Test player Vinod Kambli filed his nomination from Vikhroli for the Vidhan Sabha seat. Kambli, 37, travelled on a local train along with his supporters to file his papers as a candidate for the Lok Bharti, a constituent of the Ramdas Athavale-led Republican Left Democratic front (RLDF). “I started my innings as a cricketer traveling by train. So, I wanted to begin my new innings (in politics) that way (traveling by train),” said former cricketer. Kambli, once one of India’s most promising cricketers, played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India.

Both parties have re-negotiated the contract and IMG has reduced its annual fee to Rs 27 crore, from the earlier Rs 33 crore it was paid for the second season of the T20 tournament. For the first season, IMG was paid about Rs 43 crore. The new proposal was recently approved at BCCI’s 80th annual general meeting. BCCI will retain IMG’s services for another eight years. The agreement ends a stalemate that started on August 13 when BCCI secretary N Srinivasan wrote to IMG terminating its 10-year contract. Seven of the eight Indian Premier League’s franchises contested BCCI’s decision to terminate IMG’s contract.

One more injury can end Flintoff’s career
England’s injury-plagued all-rounder Andrew Flintoff fears his career would be over if his body breaks down one more time.”I think the next time I get injured that will be that. If the knee goes I will be gone as well,” Flintoff was quoted as saying.The 31-year-old, who rejected a England central contract to go freelance, is currently nursing a knee injury picked up during the Indian Premier League and is under rehabilitation in Dubai after going under the Knife .Flintoff said given his poor fitness record, he considers himself lucky to have played international cricket for so long. The talismanic player, who inspired England’s in two Ashes triumph, added he would look to make the most of what is left of his international career.
Gambhir goes Tendulkar way
India’s prolific opener Gautam Gambhir has signed a three-year deal with the World Sports Group (WSG). Gambhir is now the second Indian Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to have signed the deal with the sports, marketing, media and events management company. ‘‘WSG supports a brand like Sachin Tendulkar, so it’s a great honor to be associated with them,” said Delhi southpaw. The signing amount was not revealed but the cricketer seemed quite happy with the deal. Earlier, Twenty-first Century Media used to manage Gambhir.

England batsman Kevin Pietersen recently revealed that his wife was furious over a comment made by him last year, where he said that hitting 100 runs for the country was better than sex. Pietersen said that his wife, Jessica Taylor, “wasn’t happy” about his comment “Centuries don’t come round very often, whereas sex is on tap”. “But, she wasn’t pleased and I’ve since revised my view. For the record, my wife is much more important to me than any Test century,” said Pietersen.

Brett Lee’s 800-wicket goal
Brett Lee recently insisted that he can reclaim his Test spot and become the first Australian bowler to snare 400 wickets in both major forms of international cricket. At a time when Australia’s team management admit they must carefully manage Lee’s workload, the 32-year-old paceman is aiming to be playing in his country’s next Test match and in the 2011 World Cup. “I’d like to be the first Australian ever to take 400 one-day and 400 Test wickets, that to me is a milestone that 10 or 12 years ago I would never even have dreamt about,’’ Lee said. Lee already has 321 one-day wickets and 310 Test wickets in his name.
Ministry against SMS game
The sports ministry recently reacted strongly to the controversial mobile SMS game 6UP, which is being promoted by former Australian skipper Steve Waugh. Waugh had earlier said that the game is fun and will not lead to match-fixing or betting.
Ministry insisted that this game is likely to lead to betting and is against the policy of the ministry. In fact, Steve Waugh had met the sports minister MS Gill earlier and Gill had clearly said no to him. The game had created a furore during the Indian Premier League-2 and was withdrawn after Gill protested. It was re-launched in just concluded ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.
Malik in trouble
Shoaib Malik has recently invited trouble with his criticism of the team’s frequent batting reshuffle in the ICC Champions Trophy. The former Pakistan captain Malik drew the ire of captain Younis Khan and coach Intikhab Alam after blaming the team management for indulging in too much shuffling of the batting order in the Champions Trophy. Intikhab made it clear that any changes in the batting order were made because of the given situation while Younis also said that any one in the national team should be prepared to bat at any position if the team requires. Even PCB is reviewing Malik’s statement in which he said he would not bat as an opener or one-down batsman in future as it affected his batting.

Only the third batsman to amass 12,000 runs in one-day cricket, Australia skipper Ricky Ponting recently said he is only chasing benchmarks set by Sachin Tendulkar.”The number of innings of his I have been able to sit back and watch, I think, he is an amazing player. Look at his stats and records and it’s quite incredible for someone to have stayed in the game for 20 years,” said Ponting.”He has set benchmarks for guys like me to chase him and get as close as we can. Sachin Tendulkar was lucky to escape with two cuts on his face after a dizzy spell knocked him out recently in his hotel room. He was in South Africa to participate in lately completed Champions Trophy. It was the case of plain food poisoning which also troubled four other players apart from master blaster.Tendulkar said that he lost consciousness and hurt himself when he fell down on the table in his room after returning from dinner at an Indian restaurant. It is believed that Indian players had fish after which problem started. A cut near his nose and another one below the left eye as a result of the fall was some indication of the impact of his face hitting the table. Team Management has decided to lodge a complaint if at all players agrees upon it.

Kumble in favor of top players
Former India skipper Anil Kumble feels Team India’s priority now ought to be to make use of the best players for major events. “There are about 40 contracted players and that is good bench strength. It was unfortunate that India missed out a few players due to injuries in the last couple of months. Key players like Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag were obviously part of the Champions Trophy plans and the injury to Yuvraj Singh didn’t help either. But, in my opinion, for a big event, you should have all your key players to be 100 per cent,” said Kumble. “Just because you have bench strength doesn’t mean that you have to rotate the players. Every game and tournament is important. Getting your best players for a major tournament is the priority and a challenge for the team management,” added master spinner.

Dhoni’s Hummer draws Rs 100 fine
Team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the highest earning cricketer in the world at the moment, will be poorer by Rs 100 when he visits his home town Ranchi next.Jharkhand’s state transport department has recently decided to impose a fine on the star cricketer for his failure to get his new sports utility vehicle, Hummer H2, registered in the state. A transport official said one had to get a new vehicle registered in the state within seven days of its purchase, otherwise the buyer would have to shell out additional Rs 100 in fine.That’s not all. If Dhoni is found taking a joyride in his ‘prized possession’ without getting proper registration papers, he will have to pay another fine of Rs 4,500 as per the rules. This is, however, not the first time when Dhoni has been fined in his adopted home state.In 2006; a traffic constable had fined him for driving a car with tinted window panes, which is banned in Jharkhand.
