ANDREW FLINTOFF JOINS HAT-TRICK CLUB IN ONE DAYERS:
Andrew Flintoff became the third England bowler after James Anderson and Steve Harmison to perform a hat-trick in limited overs international cricket.
The 31-year-old, right arm fast bowler from Preston, Lancashire, achieved this feat in the fifth and final match against West Indies at Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on April 3,2008
Freddie hat-trick started in the 27th over of the match. He dismissed Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul and Sulieman Benn on the third, fourth and fifth ball of his fifth over. First to go was Denesh Ramdin, who shuffled into line to a full-length inswinger, but worked the ball onto the base of his own stumps. One delivery later, and Ravi Rampaul was gone as well, pinned on the crease by a shin-high full-toss, and then, with the England fans finding their voice and the West Indians starting to stream out of the exits, he produced a superlative yorker to demolish Sulieman Benn’s defences.
Flintoff’s hat trick was the 25th in 2833 one day internationals and he was the third English bowler in 508 limited overs internationals and 22nd bowler overall to achieve this feat. It was the third hat-trick in West Indies and fourth against West Indies.
Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq and Sri Lankan Chaminda Vaas are the only three bowlers to perform two hat tricks in limited overs international cricket.
Pakistan’s fast bowler Jalaluddin was the first bowler in the instant cricket to perform a hat trick. He did it against Australia at Hyderabad (Pakistan) on September 20, 1982 by dismissing Rodney Marsh, Bruce Yardley and Geoff Lawson in his seventh over.
Australian Bruce Reid performed the second hat trick of one dayers when he dismissed three New Zealand batsmen, B.R. Blair, E.B. McSweeney and S.R. Gillespie on three succesive balls in the World Series Cup match at Sydney on January 29, 1986.
In the 1987 World Cup, Indian medium pacer Chetan Sharma achieved the first hat trick in the World Cup by bowling out Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith and Even Chatfield at Vidarbha Cricket Association ground, Nagpur on October 31, 1987. It was the first hat trick by an Indian and third in one day internationals.
Wasim Akram’s first hat trick against West Indies at Sharjah on October 14, 1989 was the fourth in instant cricket. He performed this hat trick by bowling out Jeff Dujon, Malcolm Marshall and Curtly Ambrose. Incidently Ambrose’s wicket was Akram’s 100th in one day internationals.
Akram’s second hat trick came in the Australiasia Cup final against Australia at Sharjah on May 4, 1990. Akram’s victims in this hat trick were Merv Hughes, Carl Rackemann and Terry Alderman, all bowled.
India’s Kapil Dev performed the sixth hat trick in one dayers. He achieved the same against Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup at Calcutta on January 4, 1991. After dismissing Roshan Mahanama off the last ball of his sixth over, Kapil took the wickets of Sanath Jayasuriya and Rumesh Ratnayake off the first two balls of his seventh over to complete this feat.
In the Wills Trophy final at Sharjah on October 25, 1991, Pakistan’s Aaqib Javed performed seventh hat trick of instant cricket. He removed Ravi Shastri, Mohammed Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar, all leg before, off third, fourth and fifth ball in his third over. At 19 years and 81 days, he was the youngest to achieved this feat.
New Zealand’s Danny Morrison recorded the eighth hat trick against India at Napier on March 25, 1994. His victims were Kapil Dev, Salil Ankola and Nayan Mongia. It was the only hat-trick on New Zealand soil.
Pakistan’s Waqar Younis performed the ninth hat trick in instant cricket. He dismissed the last three New Zealand batsmen, Chris Harris, Chris Pringle and Richard de Groen by his late moving inswingers at East London on December 12, 1994 in the Mandela Trophy.
The only spinner to performed a hat trick in one dayers was Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq. Saqlain achieved his first hat trick against Zimbabwe on November 3, 1996 at Peshawar by removing Zimbabwean Grant Flower, John Rennie and Guy Whittal in his sixth over. He took four wickets off five balls in the match.
Eddo Brandes’ hat trick against England at Harare on January 3, 1997 was 11th in instant cricket. Brandes’ first victim was the left handerd opening batsman Nick Knight. That was the last ball of Brandes’ second over and with the first ball of his third over he had John Crawley and Nasser Hussain off the first and second ball respectively. It was the first hat trick by a Zimbabwean bowler in one day internationals and the first against England.
The second Australian bowler to achieve a hat trick in the shorter version of the game was Anthony Stuart. Playing in only his third match Rookie fast bowler Anthony Stuart picked up a hat trick against Pakistan at Sydney on January 16, 1997. He was 11th bowler in the World to perform a hat trick in one day internationals. He produced three leg cutters that brought edges from Ijaz Ahmed, Mohammed Wasim and Moin Khan on the third, fourth and fifth ball of his sixth over. It was the first hat trick against Pakistan in one dayers.
In the seventh World Cup in 1999, Saqlain Mushtaq joined Indian speedster Chetan Sharma to become the second to claim a hat trick in a World Cup match. The off-spinner achieved this feat during Pakistan’s last match in Super Six against Zimbabwe at The Oval on June 11, 1999.
Saqlain claimed the wickets of Henry Olonga, Adam Huckle and Mpumelelo Mbangwa in the first three balls of his seventh over which was the 41st over of Zimbabwean innings. It was also his second hat trick in one day internationals. He recorded his first hat trick against the same team at Peshawar on November 3,1996. Saqlain was the second bowler to achieve two hat tricks in one day internationals after his teammate Wasim Akram.
Chaminda Vaas was the first Sri Lankan to perform a hat trick in one day internationals. The left arm fast bowler achieved this feat by dismissing Stuart Carlise, Craig Wishart and Tatenda Taibu off the third, fourth and fifth ball of his sixth over against Zimbabwe at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo on December 8,2001. It was 14th hat trick in one day internationals and third against Zimbabwe.
Mohammed Sami became the sxith Pakistani and 13th bowler in the world to claim a hat trick in one day internationals. He achieved this feat by dismissing Ridley Jacobs,Corey Collymore and Cameron Cuffy off the second, third and fourth ball of his eighth over in only his sixth one day international against West Indies at Sharjah on February 15,2002. Sami’s hat trick was fourth at Sharjah and 15th in one day internationals.
Sri Lankan Chaminda Vaas recorded the 16th hat trick in limited overs international cricket by dismissing Hanan Sarkar, Mohammed Ashraful and Ehasan ul Haq off the first second and third of the very first over against Bangladesh at Pietermaritzburg on February 14,2002.
By taking Sanwar Hossain’s wicket on the fifth ball of the over, the left arm seamer became the first bowler to take four wickets in the first over of a limited overs international match. He also became third bowler to perform a hat trick in a World Cup match and joined Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq to perform two hat tricks in limited overs international cricket.
After Vaas Australian fast bowler Brett Lee joins the hat-trick club. Lee achieved the same by dismissing Kenyan Kennedy Otieno, Brijal Patel and David Obuya off the fourth, fifth and sixth ball of his second over at Durban on March 15,2003. It was the fourth hat trick in the World Cup and fourth on South African soil.
James Anderson became the first Englishman and 15th bowler overall to perform a hat trick in a limited overs international match . The right arm fast bowler from Lancashire,achieved this feat against Pakistan at The Oval on June 20,2003.
Anderson’s hat-trick started midway through the 44th over when he had Abdur Razzaq, caught at mid-off by Trescothick. Next ball Shoaib Akhtar was caught behind by wicket-keeper Chris Read before the last man Mohammed Sami was bowled by a rapid yorker.
Stephen Harmison was the second English bowler to perform a hat trick in a limited overs international match. He achieved this feat against India at Nottingham on September 1,2004 by dismissing India’s Mohammed Kaif, Lakshmipathy Balaji and Ashish Nehra.
The first South African to perform a hat-trick in limited overs international cricket was Charl Langeveldt . The right-arm fast medium bowler from Cape Province, achieved this feat against West Indies at Bridgetown on May 11,2005 by dismissing Ian Bradshaw, Daren Powell and Corey Collymore.
The last bolwet to take three wickets off successive balls before Taylor was Bangladesh’s Shahadat Hossain .He achieved this feat against Zimbabwe at Harare on August 2,2006. His victims were Tafadzwa Mufambisi, Elton Chigumbura and Prosper Utseya. It was first- ever hat- trick for Bangladesh in shorter version of the game.
Jerome Taylor was the first West Indian bowler to perform a hat-trick in limited overs international cricket. The right arm fast bowler from Jamaica, achieved this feat in the fourth match of the fifth Champions Trophy at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on October 18,2006. It was also the first hat-trick in Champions Trophy which is the second biggest tournament after World Cup.
Taylor’s hat-trick started in the 48th of the match. He bowled Michael Hussey, on the fifth ball of the over, who already frustrated by his inability to get the spinners away, swatted at one and lost his stumps. Next ball, Brett Lee was trapped plumb in front by a fast indipper to end the over. Taylor returned for the last over and shattered Brad Hogg’s leg stump as he shaped to play to leg.
Shane Bond became the second New Zealand bowler after Danny Morrison to perform a hat-trick in limited overs international cricket.
The right arm fast bowler from Canterbury, achieved this feat in the second match of Triangular Commonwealth Bank Series at Bellerive Oval. Hobart on January 14,2007.
Bond’s hat-trick started in the penultimate over of the match. He dismissed Cameron White, Andrew Symonds and Nathan Bracken on the second, third and fourth ball of his final over.
The last bowler before Flintoff to achieve this feat was Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga
He became the fifth bowler to take a hat-trick in World Cup matches. He achieved this feat in the second match of the Super Eights against South Africa at Providence Stadium, Providence, Gayana on March 28,2007
Malinga also became the first bowler in limited overs international cricket to take four wickets on four balls. He fooled Shaun Pollock with a beauty of a slower ball before hurrying Andrew Hall with a juddering yorker that looped up to cover. The first ball of the next over produced the hat-trick, when the set Jacques Kallis nicked to the wicketkeeper before a brute of a yorker zoomed past Makhaya Ntini.
No bowler in one-day history has managed four in four -Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq has managed four in five against Zimbabwe at Peshawar on November 3,1996.
